Okay, this is actually it. The real video for Ciara’s “Body Party,”—a full-on summer jam among spring album-previews. It must be hard to constantly be compared to an icon who passed before her time (the angel, the tomboy, the forever-young Aaliyah). But our girl has done well with the impossible ideals set before her, by referencing the past, and dating the Future.
Have you ever fantasized about being a fly on the wall when these two met? We’re not afraid to say we have, and this little scene, acted out by the real life bf and gf almost quells this desire. Here, Ciara plays hard to get when Future throws her some game, but only for as long as it takes for the scene to change. Once in the bedroom, we see how the baggies-and-designer-knockoff-T-shirt wearing girl-next-door gets more grown up than her predecessor had the chance to in a flawless striptease. If this is really what happened when Future asked out CIara, we have a newfound respect for this woman (who, by the way, has the exact measurements of the silhouette on every big rig’s mud flaps, truth).
Like the throwback lyrics (“boy you should know that / I’ve got you on my mind”), half of this body party is a nineties-inspired pregame. The girls get together and decide to stay in and invite everyone over instead of heading to the club. In their daywear, this crowd could be from a 1996 video. It’s that parsing of current and retro that has given Ciara’s career legs: She’s not forgetting who paved the way for her, but she’s confidently, even smilingly moving forward.
