CHLOE AND TARA LIKE, HATE LA

TEXT NATASHA STAGG

Sometimes we wonder if we're living in the right place. New York is everything, but Los Angeles is always calling us—literally, our phones are ringing off the hooks from location shoots and music festival/Hollywood coverage, always introduced by some amaaaaazingweatherrrr small talk. But what's so amazing about weather? Isn't that only outside?

To coincide with the opening of the 2013 Urs Fischer exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, MOCAtv presents a short film about LA (look out for the flyer for the Gala in the opening of the film). “Magic Hours,” directed and co-written and co-produced by Tara Subkoff, starring Chloë Sevigny, co-written and co-produced by Tatiana Von Furstenberg, and soundtracked by Lissy Trullie, is truly an it-girl manifesto. Grey (Sevigny) has moved from our favorite place in the universe to sunny LA, and her gaze has been turned, from the buzzing streets and skyscrapers, to her own fickle self. As we watch her masturbatory monologue (a phone-call, actually), our fears are assuaged: Grey discovers she has a severe problem with intimacy; she’s attached to an isolating setting, seeing now that physical "bubbles" are easier to manage than the self-constructed type here in spacious California. Oh good. As long as we’re as psychologically damaged as this character (who would rather talk on the phone than in person, if given the option), NYC is where we’ll stay... and LA is where we'll visit, as many times as physically possible throughout the year.

URS FISCHER runs at MOCA from April 21st to August 19th
