TEXT GILLIAN SAGANSKY

Best known for his multi-screen video works exploring the psychological and physical displacement precipitated by contemporary society’s obsession with mass media and technology, multimedia artist Doug Aitken takes a sculptural approach in his new show "100 Years" at 303 Gallery. The show consists of four new sculptures, Sunset (black)MORE (shattered pour), Fountain (Earth Fountain), and Sonic Fountain. The most striking work is Sonic Fountain, in which water drips from pipes suspended from the gallery’s ceiling into a murky pool of water drilled into the gallery floor. Both the work and atmosphere create a post-apocalyptic or parallel dream world, as each drop of water is amplified by speakers which adds to the otherworldly experience. In his films Aitken resists traditional narrative and temporal coherency, opting for a world with no beginning or end. Much like the world he has created with Sonic Fountain, repetition takes over and one loses all perspective of time standing in front of the sculpture.

"100 Years" is on view at 303 Gallery, 547 W 21st Street New York, NY, until March 23rd.
