Yogi Cameron Alborzian's new book, The One Plan, is a "week-by-week guide to restoring your natural health and happiness." What better way to start off the new year (if a week late), than to ask the spiritual guide and ex-model a few questions on how he keeps it all together, and how we can do the same?
How do you feel about new year's resolutions?
Yogi Cameron Rather than resolve to lose weight, and to be more physically active, and find a relationship, and to do a whole bunch of other things, it's better to use the path outlined by the ancient sage Patanjali to address all aspects of our lives step by step. In the Eightfold Path, he presents us with a series of behaviors and practices to incorporate into our lives—when we do this as he instructs, we come to the weight we're supposed to be naturally, we become more active for the sake of being healthy enough to participate in the path's higher practices, and we attract more balanced relationships. Our lives become ones of peace and purpose in which our real beauty shines from within.
What about sticking to the path?
YC Rather than take on the whole of the yogic path all at once, it's ideal to chip away at our lifestyle gradually over time. Just like Michelangelo took three years to chip away at a large, damaged hunk of marble before he revealed the David, we too can uncover the masterpiece that sits inside of us if we take on a little bit of a more beneficial lifestyle at a time. This leads to a genuine change in our lifestyle instead of distracting ourselves with fleeting behaviors.
Tell us about your journey from model to yogi.
I was mentored by a friend of mine in Paris throughout most of my modeling career, and he introduced me to a life of spiritual growth and healthy living. He had been diagnosed with HIV before we had met, and this development in his life inspired him to live with greater awareness and purpose. He introduced me to all sorts of spiritual books, and challenged me to find my purpose as well. I realized he had been my mentor when he died in 2000, and within a couple of years I left my previous life behind and embraced the sharing of the Yogic path as my purpose in life. Modeling focuses on outer beauty and the yogic path guides us on the inner light. But between the two journeys I feel I have been taught the value of both.
