He is turning 66, and, incredibly, still writing songs we're putting on repeat. For the first time in ten years, David Bowie has released a new album, and it's available today (January 8th), exclusively on iTunes. The video for the single "Where Are We Now?" feels appropriately stripped-down, considering the choice to forgo the major-label route he's indulged in the past. Directed by Tony Oursler, it features Bowie as one of the video artist's signature dolls, snuggled up to a silent friend. The extra footage and the song tell a somber story—readable in the lyrics, typed out fan-vid style over the action—set in a somber Berlin. This is a humble Bowie but a strong and aware one, with little to no irony. Coming from a career track that has emphasized all levels of pretension, this newest version of the godfather of glam is a simple man, with simple emotions, expressed in a stunning album, full of lovingly written, fully original (and catchy) material. How could anyone have expected less?
