SPARKLE MOTION

TEXT DEREK BLASBERG

The list of adjectives one could apply to the annual Victoria’s Secret show is long: sexy, seductive, tantalizing, fabulous. But for Nadja Swarovski, head of the family dynasty, one of them sticks out: sparkling. Fair enough, as this year’s show—held this past fall at New York City’s Lexington Armory—utilized more than one million Swarovski Elements crystals, to adorn everything from the costumes and lingerie to the stilettos and accessories. The most staggering piece in the new catwalk lineup? A life-size bedazzled boa constrictor.

Without a doubt, the Victoria’s Secret and Swarovski teams had much to celebrate. The show marked their tenth year of collaborating, with each camp continuing to inspire the other. “The design team pushes the level of creative to even greater heights with each show, and we are always thrilled to see how the crystal inspires their designs,” she explains.

The show opened with Adriana Lima, one of the most famous Angels, stomping out in a barely-there suit of black lace lingerie, having birthed her second child only a few months before. (Every woman in the audience must have felt a twinge of envy, and what the gentlemen were thinking could easily be guessed.) Following Lima came several more of high fashion’s sexiest females, including Karlie Kloss, Candice Swanepoel, Joan Smalls, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Cara Delevingne, in a series of looks that ranged from Old Hollywood (think 1940s gowns, lavishly embellished) to Delevingne’s cutie candy striper. The show’s pièce de résistance—a 10th anniversary edition of the brand’s trademark wings—fanned out in glittery glory on the back of beauty Cameron Russell. The live entertainment produced star wattage of its own, with performances from Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, and Rihanna. To steal a lyric from the latter, the show shined bright like a diamond-—with a little help from Swarovski, of course.
