“I was looking at cars, thinking about the speed and the materials they use for the interiors. It became a world of inspiration to me and everyone I work with,” said designer Louise Goldin backstage at her New York debut in September, understandably weary yet glowing from the buzz of her standout Spring collection. The British expat, known for her bold, eye-catching knits, returned to the runway after a brief hiatus, drawing from her body-con sensibility and British daring, to great effect. The collection was a cool mix of sexy dresses in fresh spring colors (cerulean, white, saffron) with interesting but not too complicated patchwork in separates and layers. “New York is a great place to show for me now. I like the spirit. London is its own thing, but I’m here now.” The scene at the show was pleasantly insidery, with NY fashion Brits on hand to cheer for a hometown favorite. Until the arrival of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, that is. The duo brought the requisite flurry of camera snaps and whiplash turns from the surrounding rows—the kind of PR coup some designers hope for, but of which Goldin remained adorably unaware. She needs little help spreading the word, as the killer clothes do all the talking.
