A CLUB CALLED RHONDA IS A PARTY IN LOS ANGELES. A DESIGNER NAMED TREVOR TARCZYNSKI CREATES THEIR FABULOUS FLIERS.

I feel we have a lot in common; I come from a family of freelancers, too. I don't know about you, but I think this must have an impact on the we live.
TT It's great to meet other freelance kids. I wonder if our parents have met in the biz. It really is a lifestyle and definitely something you're born into. The pioneering spirit I guess, or just bohemian—but with less vagabondry and more drive to complete things. It's had an impact on my life both good and bad. Bad being, it was always feast or famine, and also missing my dad because he worked such wacky hours. The plus being the art of the hustle. That sounds corny, but it's true. Being proprietary has to be in your genes. I meet a lot of people who stick to the straight-and-narrow and that's great. I often wish I could stay put, but there's a compulsion to keep moving. Ultimately though, I think it's an asset. I just see more opportunity in the freelance lifestyle. The idea of working your way up from the mail room seems laughable, mostly because of the huge divergence between the haves and have-nots. It's also essential because of the web—that was the game changer. It's especially true in this weird post-internet phase. There's such an amazing network to cultivate your talents, then broadcast them out to the universe. How can you not be inspired to do something?

So you feel like you have to always be working?
TT 
Yes, always. When you find something you enjoy doing, you naturally want to get better at it, maybe even be the best. So practice and fine tuning are essential to any designer's integrity. Same as evolution to an artist. It's a conversation with yourself and others—and you should try to make it a good one! I've always been inspired by the original Conan the Barbarian from 1982 and John Boorman's Excalibur. In both films there's these themes of a quest. The search. In one it's for revenge and the other for the Grail (which initself is a crazy metaphor) but I feel like that can parallel so many people's lives. Everybody seeks something. But specific to artists it can be alienating and often debilitating; it can eclipse everything. Yet there's so much satisfaction in the journey and it can be a noble endeavor, you know? A focused adventure can yield such absolute awe.

How did the Rhonda fliers start?
TT I've been working with Rhonda for maybe three years now. Loren [Granic] had been doing most of the previous designs. I had been to the club and it was a blast, I loved it—total Dionysian revelry. So when they put the word out they were looking for a new designer I jumped on it. My tryout was a flyer for "Hercules & Love Affair" and "In Flagranti," and I've been on the team since. I work closely with Loren and [Gregory Alexander] on everything. They've always had an amazing vision and I've worked to help them bring it into focus. In the beginning the flyers were more random, but I've helped guide them to a more consistent look and feel.

Rhonda is a fantastic character. It's always revolved around her voice. Like a beacon to Clubland. She's exotic and beautiful but also the Queen—so don't fuck with her. The core theme has always been polysexual hard partying and I think the flyers strive to reflect that. There's continual use of bold text, which underscores her dominance. Bright colors or stark black/white, excessive patterns and a rotating collage of imagery pertaining to music, sexuality, sensuality, reverence, decadence, identity, fashion and glamour. But mostly it's just an organic thing. Over time the look has changed because Rhonda has evolved. Different venues, DJs, events and perception of herself factor into the look. It's also about respect for the music and culture. Keeping an honest dialogue with the past while simultaneously exploring new ideas for the future.

What's coming up next?
TT
Rhonda's always keeping me busy. She's got Coachella, SXSW, the expansion of Rhonda International Records and of course the monthly party collateral. As for the bigger arc? I just want to keep producing great work. To collaborate with gifted people who push the boundaries and can see the big picture. Adding visually and conceptually to the bubbling scene in Los Angeles and establishing a better presence on the web. I also plan on putting aside more time to focus on personal work. And last I'd like to start lending my talents to some philanthropic causes. To not offer effective design to people in need would be unconscionable. 
A Club Called Rhonda is gearing up for her first date with UK house heavyweight Julio Bashmore, making his first LA appearance alongside LA's own Total Freedom, Samo Sound Boy, Delroy Edwards, and residents GODDOLLARS, Paradise and James Del Barco at Club Los Globos tonight (December 14th).
