AT ONLY 15 YEARS OLD, SOFIA RICHIE IS PROBABLY COOLER THAN ANY OF US
If you were an adolescent in the early 2000s, you most likely remember seeing Grant Wood's American Gothic parodied by two denim-clad blondes, one with her Chihuahua Tinkerbell in hand. The unsuspecting farmhands were Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, who spent four years experiencing (and making a playful mockery of) the lives of American plebeians on their Fox reality show The Simple Life. If you tuned in Tuesdays at 8:30EST, you witnessed one hijinks-filled failure after another: Paris and Nicole worked as attendants at gas stations, nudist colonies, and dentists' offices, to name a few stops on their penny-pinching road trip. Both girls have since returned to their lavish, less-than-simple lives, Paris to an empire of branded perfumes and a budding music career, Nicole to a family way and some impressive fashion-industry positions. Back then, Richie's many trademarked sayings and DGAF attitude made her the breakout star of the trailblazing reality series (Paris was already pretty recognizable as a scandalous socialite), but it's been a while since we've seen that sense of humor in action.
Enter #CandidlyNicole, Richie's triumphant return to reality TV. The VH1 series follows a lavender-haired Richie as she learns to parallel park with dad Lionel Richie, etc. Those of us nostalgic for The Simple LIfe aren't the only ones watching, though. The Jenneration (aka Kendall and Kylie’s kohort) watch the show to see Sofia, Nicole’s 15-year-old sister, and friend to a few other younger siblings in similarly televised situations. Although her formal appearances in popular media are scarce, Sofia boasts an Instagram following of almost 400k and an impressive 14 different fan blogs. This base didn’t form in just the two weeks that #CandidlyNicole has been on air. A scroll through her personal tumblr clues us in as to why she is so well-loved by her peers. A mix of modern fashion imagery and her own selfies is sufficiently less awkward than a vast majority of teen-tumblrers. V hit up the young singer/model/reality TV star for a #candid chat.
