Hurricane Sandy destroyed the homes and livelihoods of many residents of Rockaway, NY. But before that, the Rockaways were young yet, a burgeoning and beautiful community still in construction of its own unique New York identity, and Chris Romulo was instrumental in bringing together that community through his gym CROM Martial Training. The gym wasn't just a place to train the brilliant art of Muay Thai, but a place where Chris, who is a spokesperson for anti-bullying advocacy both locally and nationally, could help keep local kids off the streets through the Muay Thai Preservation Project. But Sandy destroyed the gym, leaving not just Chris, his wife Sarah, their children, and the CROM MT family without a home, but countless Rockaway kids without a safe haven and place of respite. “There really aren’t many options for the youth out here in Rockaway,” says Sarah. “Kids come in and use our training facility to build their minds, bodies and spirits, to give them tools to use in the outside world."
We here at VMAN love to support a good cause, especially when it intersects with the arts—typically they're visual in nature, but we're also huge advocates of the martial arts. When Justin Blair and The Friday Night Fights Muay Thai team heard the news about CROM, they put together a benefit that we wholeheartedly support. This Saturday, December 15th, NYC's pre-eminent Muay Thai downtown throwdowns will be entirely devoted to rebuilding CROM MT and the Romulo family legacy. The night will feature a full fight card, a silent auction, and other fundraising activities. The event is called Fight For Rockaway, so come out and show your support this friday and fight not with your fists. In the immortal words of Chris Romulo: "All it takes is heart."
