OHWOW IN DALLAS

TEXT KRISTIN TICE STUDEMAN

April 10th. 2014. Watch out Texas—OHWOW Gallery co-founders Aaron Bondaroff and Al Moran are in town for the Dallas Art Fair this weekend and they are ready to mix things up. The two have set up shop in the Comme des Garçons PLAY storefront at Dallas' Joule Hotel, where they’ll be broadcasting their KNOW-WAVE pop-up radio station, featuring guest hosts like Piper Marshall, Will Boone, and Lele Saveri (all are a part of the regular programming crew in New York, along with Dan Colen, Kembra Pfahler, and Lucien Smith). As for what they’ll be talking about, and with whom, in classic KNOW-WAVE style it’s TBD. A-Ron did reveal, however, that he’s hoping to get “G. Dubs,” as in George W.  Bush, on the station to discuss his recently unveiled portrait exhibition in Dallas, “The Art of Leadership: A President’s Personal Diplomacy.” Here’s what else he had to report from Dallas.

I know you like to stick to a no-format-format, but what can you tell us about this weekend’s programming?
AARON BONDAROFF
Rafael de Cardenas, the original designer of our OHWOW Book Club in New York, is our architect-at-large, and he designed the window front, then Lele Saveri from 8 Ball Zines curated the space with 'zines and books. We're here free-form programming. We've just been reaching out to people who're going to be here and we’ll have a bunch of people making playlists throughout the week.

What conversations are you hoping to inspire with your Dallas pop-up radio station?
AB
It will definitely be different than how we do it in NYC. New York is our hometown and we do things every week, just vibing at the moment. Here, we are on location and doing our thing. There are six of us from KNOW-WAVE and we are just going to have discussions with some of the other people. I have Piper Marshall, she's a curator, down here with us as well. She is directing some of the interviews with some of the art people to mix it up. It won’t be so academic. More a highbrow-lowbrow. I am more into like the unibrow kind of vibe. Right in the middle, you know?

There are some interest things happening with Dallas and its art scene right now. What is your take on it?
AB
I don’t know, I just got here last night.  It’s pretty quiet out here. I feel like it’s a holiday every day. But I can see, as the fair starts to take shape, it could definitely be a good experience for the young art collectors of Dallas to get the vibe of what is happening in the art scene on a global level.

What drew you guys want to be in Dallas for the art fair this week?
AB
KNOW-WAVE is an extension of OHWOW. OHWOW is the main focus of what we do. We want to extend the norm of what a gallery is these days, especially in such a commerce-driven scene right now. At the end of the day, it’s about what we believe in and being a part of the culture and working with great artists. It’s just an exercise for all of us to come and be active. These things can be stale at times. It’s about business and marketing. It’s about bringing the atmosphere and lifestyle we have here to Dallas.

As you know, George W. Bush just opened his exhibit there in Dallas. Have you seen it yet?
AB
Yeah, not yet. But Piper, who is running KNOW-WAVE programming, has reached out to G. Dubs. So, hopefully, he will be coming on and talking about his art. That would be so cool.

The KNOW-WAVE pop-up radio station and storefront will be at 1608 Main St., Dallas, TX until Sunday, April 12th 2014
