DANNY FITZGERALD AND LES DEMI DIEUX: BROOKLYN BOYS

TEXT WYATT ALLGEIER

FOR 10 YEARS NOW VMAN HAS MADE ITS MODUS OPERANDI THE CHRONICLING OF TALENTED, BEAUTIFUL, AND UNIQUE MEN, SO WE WERE THRILLED FOR THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF STEVEN KASHER GALLERY'S DANNY FITZGERALD AND LES DEMI DIEUX: BROOKLYN BOYS EXHIBITION, OPENING THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12TH.

Before VMAN, before Calvin Klein underwear ads, and before Mapplethorpe there was a photographer from Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn named Danny Fitzgerald who helped pave the way for documenting the grace and divinity of the male subject.

This terrific show at Steven Kasher Gallery in Chelsea, which includes 35 portraits and male nudes, exists within the current trend of male physique photography that has popped up all over 2013, from Invisible Export's exhibition of Bob Mizer photographs, to ACME's homage to Bruce of Los Angeles. Here at VMAN we have always believed that the male form was as artesian as any sculptural form and that photography is on par with painting, so this up crop of masculine subjects posing and flexing on gallery walls feels like a glorious vindication. More beaux-art than tawdry "beefcake" soft-core Fitzgerald's work, which peaked in the early 1960's, exists within a legacy that includes master photographers such as George Platt Lynes, Walker Evans, and Dorthea Lang.  His images are of beautiful men in various stages of undress, sure, but their real contribution lays in the image's ability to document and contextualize a specific place in history, as document of time past. His utilization of an aesthetic that synthesized classism and realism was visionary.

Click through the slideshow above for a sample of these historical gems and be sure to stop by Steven Kasher Gallery, located at 521 West 23rd Street, to check out this phenomenal show. Danny Fitzgerald and Les Demi Dieux: Brooklyn Boys will be on view December 12th through January 18th, 2014. The Opening Reception on December 12th from 6 PM to 8PM will also include a book signing with Richard Bennett (Fitzgerald’s muse and partner). The exhibition is presented in conjunction with Roxanne Lowit: Be Fabulous, which is definitely worth a gander for all of you fashion enthusiasts. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 AM to 6 PM.
