Last night, V attended the opening reception for Hunter & Gatti’s “The Series,” featuring new portraits and painted-over photographs. Known for art-directing campaigns for Diesel and Burberry, the two creative minds behind Hunter & Gatti are adopting a new focus: transformation.

Julia Restoin Roitfeld, who hosted the photography duo’s American debut, told V that she was delighted with the event’s turnout. Upon entering the gallery space, a row of celebrity portraits of Carolyn Murphy, Poppy Delevingne, Bruno Mars, and Douglas Booth greeted the guests.

At the back of the room, large-sized canvases flanked the walls, and to the left hung a captivating series of actress Ziyi Zhang. The photographs, which had initially been shot for Flaunt, were blown up and overlaid with streaks of red and white acrylic paint. V exchanged a few words with Christine de Lassus, who styled the original shoot. “Hunter & Gatti’s work is groundbreaking; their unique vision allows them to mix art and photography with integrity,” she said, as she admired what had become of it.

After getting a Polaroid taken at the photo booth and enjoying the Misshapes’s live performance, V caught up with Cristian Borillo of Hunter & Gatti. “A photograph is just a moment, it’s a second. But a painting relies on your relationship with that paint. It’s not just about one second, but about the processes—one month or two—during which your point of view changes.”

In the last room the crowd found themselves surrounded by still lifes of designer lipsticks on slabs of meat, juxtaposed with video projections of more meat. On display was the first volume of Hunter & Gatti’s newest print project, HG Issue. This first edition, “Carne,” draws on the creators’ meatspiration. “It’s very raw, it’s very natural,” said the other half of HG, Martin Cespedes. “It’s our first creation before getting on board the adventure that will be HGissue.com.”
