Chasing Mavericks chronicles the true story of Jay Moriarity, teen surfing sensation and late-great surf icon. Curtis Hanson’s take, as his biopics tend to, tells a story both timeless and time-specific. In this case, we’re looking at a classic hero’s journey while listening to a specific 1990s soundtrack. This is the kind of flashback some of us have been waiting for (and others of us have been preemptively avoiding): an entirely accurate revisit to a college-rock adolescence. It starts off with radio-friendly grunge, follows through with some skate-and-surf crowd favorites and finishes up with more of the same. This is not to say that these songs are played out. In fact, I don’t remember the last time I’ve heard the pure, 90s idealism heard in The Lemonheads’s “Into Your Arms” and Mazzy Star’s “Blue Light” not tarnished by a group of old college buddies near a Pixies-heavy jukebox. Though hardly obscure, the track list for Chasing Mavericks: Music from the Motion Picture (found below) aims to jump-start memories of simpler times (like the blissed-out moments Moriarity experiences in the film), and not necessarily to crowd-please hard grunge enthusiasts. This stoner-romantic sound is a softer side of the genre infrequently referenced by film, despite its shy modesty, perfect for backing. Here’s hoping the future of documenting this golden age in music will continue to ride this wave.
Look for the soundtrack on iTunes tomorrow, October 23rd, and be sure to read our interview between Mavericks star Jonny Weston and coach/stunt double Greg Long in VMan 27 or HERE.
