SKY'S THE LIMIT

TEXT NICO MAO

MOMENTS BEFORE MILEY CYRUS ANNOUNCED ON TWITTER THAT SKY FERREIRA WOULD BE JOINING HERSELF AND ICONA POP ON THEIR TOUR STARTING ON VALENTINE'S DAY OF 2014 (NOW OFFICIALLY GIRLS-JUST-WANNA-HAVE-FUN DAY), THE 21-YEAR-OLD GAVE AN EMOTIONAL PERFORMANCE AT WEBSTER HALL IN NYC. V WAS THERE TO CATCH THE FIRST NIGHT OF THE REST OF HER LIFE

Effortlessly pairing a set of mismatched socks with a prim, plaid baby doll from Hedi Slimane’s Fall 2013 collection, Sky Ferreira kicked off her tour alongside Smith Westerns Monday night to a packed house at Webster Hall.  Her much buzzed-about debut album “Night Time, My Time” was cause for a horde of fans to venture out into the cold and into the packed venue.  Anticipation was high.

Coyly walking onto stage after Smith Western’s set, Sky held a hydrangea, which she broke apart and threw into the roaring audience – the first of many tokens of appreciation she sent her fans throughout the night.  During her performance of  “I Blame Myself,” she began to tear up upon realizing that the audience was singing along.  Overcome, she looked to her band members in disbelief, began to cry, and passed the mic fan-to-fan as she composed herself.  Much of her performance was spent squatting right at the edge of the stage, bringing her eye-level with front-row devotees, whom she chose to embrace the hands of or playfully ignore depending on a given song’s mood.

When fans requested her hit “Everything’s Embarrassing” toward the beginning of her set, she came right back and playfully scoffed, "I'm not playing "Everything is Embarrassing" yet; do you want people to walk out in the middle of the set?"  Despite endearing microphone drops, a mistimed start, and a recent vocal cord hemorrhage, Sky never lost her sense of humor.

A small table stood behind her mic stand with a short bouquet of white roses, a gift from her boyfriend and band member Zachary Cole Smith.  The chemistry between the two was clear.  She spent most of her set stage left, where Cole played the keyboard and helped her with timing.

She could not emphasize enough how surreal headlining Webster Hall was for her, as she used to live in an apartment mere blocks away.

After performing “Lost in my Bedroom” as an encore, per the audience’s request, Sky explained how the song was written in the clothes-filled bedroom of that very apartment.  While writing, she actually felt lost in her mess of a room and couldn’t help but feel like everyone “hated her.” We’re certainly happy she found her way out.
