ISABEL "IZZY" ALMEIDA AND HER BAND, HUNTERS, HAVE BEEN SPOTTED EVERYWHERE LATELY, FROM DINGY PUNK CLUBS TO ON-POINT FASHION BLOGS. PERHAPS THE WORLD IS READY AGAIN FOR SOME D.I.Y. ATTITUDE AND RAW TALENT, AND PERHAPS, TOO, WE'RE ALL JUST A LITTLE BIT TAKEN BY THE REAL GIRL-IN-THE-WORLD STYLE THAT IS IZZY'S

The music scene needs more women like Izzy Almeida. Even after months of on and off touring, festivals and photo shoots like this one for VMagazine.com, she's excited to be playing shows with her boyfriend and bandmate Derek Watson (on guitar)—and the other Brooklyn-based Hunters members, Thomas Martin (bass), and Gregg Giuffre (drums). Instead of complaining about the trials of travel and friendship in confined spaces, Almeida told us she wishes her tours were longer, with more opportunities to expend a whole lot of energy on stage. On being the only female in the band, she says, "I'm used to it. I actually have a lot of guy friends in general so it's all good. But it's great when we tour with bands that have girls in them. It makes the dynamic more fun. We've been luck to tour with a bunch of bands like that so thankfully it's not an issue."

Hunters's live performance presence is an anomaly among today's canned and remixed status quo, reminiscent of the early days of riot grrl. Izzy's uncontained movement even has an aftertaste of Runaway Cherry Curie. The band's sound has been described as a punkier Gish-era Smashing Pumpkins, due to a laid back yet surprisingly full sound coming from combined male and female vocals and a classic four-piece set. Their personal style, too, is important to note as a refresher course in when kids loved watching bands play out. There is something simply enchanting about a girl who wears a worn T-shirt and tights or a simple babydoll/combat boot combo like she was born in them—and not since Gwen Stefani first tried it has pink hair looked this cool, especially paired with her new Carrera by Jimmy Choo sunglasses, which she took extra care not to lose on tour, which, she assures us, is saying a lot.
