It was inevitable that M.I.A. would come out with her own clothing line, and it just makes SO much sense that it would be with Versus Versace. Here's why we figured: Versus is the loudest of the luxury brands open to exciting collabs, and Maya is notoriously... loud. Meaning: she's actually super outspoken, but she also tends to dress loudly, repping the chorus a crowded Versace garment communicates. She loves gold, and logomania, and bright colors. Plus, on the heels of that way-90s J.W. Anderson project, the high drama Donatella Lifetime biopic, House of Versace, and a whole lot of musical interest in and from Donatella's camp, "Versace, Versace, Versace" is now the image of the new scene-kid's addiction to retro excess. How perfectly meta for to adorn an anti-capitalist pro-IRL voice, as heard in M.I.A.'s new record, Matangi (scheduled for a November 4th release date), with such a conflated image.
In this video, premiering here on VMagazine.com today (November 1st), we see M.I.A.'s adorable collaboration with Versus in its natural habitat: The designs were based on the knockoff Versaces she spotted on the streets of East London as a teenager. Layer that one on!
