PREMIERE VIDEO: PUSHA T - KING PUSH

TEXT Natasha Stagg

September 26th, 2013. "I rap, nigga / about trap, nigga / I don't sing hooks..." Pusha T asserts, as fond as he is of doing so, that he is still "King Push," in his new single of the same name (off the forthcoming album My Name Is My Name, available on iTunes October 8th), and rightfully so. In 2013, Kanye has remade himself as a rap-rocker (but Pusha is the "black Zack de la Rocha"), Drake has gone even further in the classic R&B direction (see: "I don't sing hooks"), and A$AP Rocky has collaborated with almost as many unexpected artists as Lil' Wayne, who isn't bowing out of that game-changing race any time soon, either. With the fight to finish first as the most genre-defying rapper, Pusha-T laughs at the competition while pushing out new classic trap tracks, and making it look easy. Even without blatantly beefing with all the other players in the game right now, Pusha makes it clear he could handle the comparisons with gusto—but he can't help throwing in a dig or two, letting us know the "difference between me and HOVA." After famously dissing Wayne, Drake, and others via lyrics as half of Clipse, he picks his guests wisely, and it's should say something about his character that all of the invitees RSVPed. On MNIMN, hit makers Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, 2 Chainz, Big Sean, Chris Brown, Rick Ross, Future and The-Dream appear, to name a few possible supporters of a Clipse-style feud (btw, in case you didn't get the memo, beef is really in right now). And we can't wait to hear who goes under the knife next. Anyway, in the video above, premiering here on VMAN.com today (September 27th), an elegant display of only the essentials of any good rap video—the rapper, and an American flag (in black and white)—give us a good idea of what's coming up musically from this maverick/tradionalist: The King is back.
