FOR "YOU'RE NOT THE ONE," THE FIRST SINGLE OFF HER UPCOMING ALBUM NIGHT TIME, MY TIME, SKY FERREIRA ENLISTS DIRECTOR GRANT SINGER TO CREATE A SURREAL, SUBTERRANEAN, TOTALLY EPIC REVENGE FANTASY
This is what pop videos are supposed to look like. An exercise in exorcising the demons of a doomed relationship, "You're Not The One" is Sky Ferreira's first single off of her finally-announced debut LP Night Time, My Time, out October 29 via Capitol Records...and it's a breakup anthem for the ages.
To capture the eternal scorn of the hopeless mind, Sky has enlisted friend and collaborator Grant Singer [also the director of IRL, a project that, full disclosure, I wrote and co-produced] to direct a leather-clad video depicting the destruction of a relationship amid a dark, laser-streaked, effervescent club world. It's a clear homage to the opening sequence in Tony Scott's seminal vampire classic The Hunger, in which Bowie and Deneuve saunter in silhouette to the sounds of Peter Murphy and screeching monkeys in cages, casting an uncharacteristically dark and vampiric shadow onto a pop song about heartbreak and, well...being, like, "so gone". Part Bauhaus and part True Blue-era Madonna, the photography reminds us of what pop videos once looked like, back when they were done on film with decent budgets during the heyday of Jean-Baptise Mondino and David Fincher. There may not be twerking teddybears or naked swimsuit models pleasuring themselves with foam stadium souvenirs, but this is a sophisticated and stunning style of video performance that warrants a welcome resurrection from the grave.
