VMAGAZINE.COM EXCLUSIVE: THE ARTIST BEHIND THE ARTIST IS PRESENT TELLS US (BY WAY OF METAPHOR) THAT JUST AS MUCH AS WE NEED HER, SHE NEEDS US
Longtime friend and inspiration to V, performance artist Marina Abramović has been through more than most can imagine in order to get where she is today. By literally putting herself in the crosshairs (a number of times), she's captured the attention of the art world, but also the mainstream, for which she will forever be both celebrated and scrutinized. It makes perfect sense, then, that she has invited her audience to become more present in her work, creating an institute that will foster conversation surrounding the artist and her art. Plans for the MAI (Marina Abramović Institute) are well under way, and with your help, using Kickstarter, this dream can be made a reality by 2015.
We know Ms. Abramović as a celebrity to celebrities—an artist whose force can intimidate the feeble-minded, and touch the true participant. Through her work we have seen what strength and control a human being is capable of: For example, she deflects vulnerability simply by making herself completely vulnerable (see the Kickstarter video for more).
In the video above, we see something else from the artist altogether: a moment of tender reflection. Exclusively for VMagazine.com, this video, directed by Noah Blumenson-Cook, asks what she thinks of children… and ends up telling the story of Fredericka, a baby kangaroo. Abramović never had children, but all of us are her children, in a way. One goal of the institute, she says, is to unconditionally transmit her knowledge and experience to a new generation of artists, scientists, and thinkers, and this is the inspiration behind telling the tale of Fredericka.
