LAST WEEK, WE RECIEVED A SURPRISE IN THE MAIL (DID YOU SEE OUR INSTAGRAM VIDEO?): ISSUE 1 OF 1 GRANARY MAGAZINE, THE JOURNAL BY STUDENTS AT CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS, WHICH IS A SUBSTANTIAL PUBLICATION, BOTH IN PHYSICAL WEIGHT AND IN CONTENT. PHOTOGRAPHY AND INTRICATE VISUAL ART ACCOMPANY INTERVIEWS BY HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL MEMBERS OF THE FASHION WORLD, ESSAYS AND STUDENTS' PERSONAL STORIES. BELOW IS THE "TEAM LETTER," AND ABOVE, JUST ONE OF THE MANY EDITORIALS USING PIECES MADE BY MEMBERS OF THE FASHION SCHOOL
We came to Central Saint Martins aware of its legacy. We knew the names of those who had passed through the college before us, and the contributions they made to the arts loomed over us. Some people would be intimidated by this, but we take it as a challenge that we must rise to. The likes of John Galliano, Raqib Shaw and Alexander McQueen set the bar high for us, but we like to believe that the current students and graduates can live up to their example.
The college has an energy within it that can’t quite be put into words. But in every studio and every classroom and every corridor, there is something special in the air. People are creating. They’re experimenting and pushing boundaries and developing abstract ideas into real, concrete things. They’re working together to build something new and to add onto the legacy of those who have come before us.
1 Granary is a platform for this energy. Named for the address of the new college building in Kings Cross, we aim to showcase the talent that is bouncing around the building’s walls. From fashion to fine art to drama and graphic design – we want to show the rest of the world what Central Saint Martins is about. This magazine functions as a showcase for all that: we have interviewed some of the most accomplished of CSM’s alumni, from Kate Phelan to Raqib Shaw to Glen Matlock and more. And we have positioned this alongside fashion and art editorials, juxtaposing the work of current students with that of our favourite of the college’s graduates. In this magazine, you are holding the past and the present of the college in your very hands.
More and more, the outside world wants to capitalise on the college’s promise: from the new building’s LVMH lecture theatre to Daphne Guinness’s plans to exhibit Isabella Blow’s wardrobe in the college’s gallery. The influence of Central Saint Martins can be felt around the world, across the arts and beyond. We wanted to open up the building’s walls, to showcase the work of our peers alongside those who have come before us.
You could say that CSM is having something of a cultural moment right now, but we would counter that there’s constantly something exciting happening here. Come inside, turn the page and let us show you around.
With love, the 1 Granary
