You may not have heard of Stacy Martin, but you’re about to. The 23-year-old model turned actor shares the lead role in Danish avant-garde filmmaker Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac: where the Paris-based talent plays sex-maniac Joe between the ages of 15 and 31, while Von Triers’ perennial star, Charlotte Gainsbourg, portrays the character at a later stage in life.

How did the neophyte thespian, having just graduated from acting school, feel about playing the young Gainsbourg and making her debut alongside cinema veterans Shia LeBeouf, Stellan Skarsgård, Willem Dafoe, and Uma Thurman?

“I guess I was nervous, or I felt like I should have been, at least,” she confesses before her V shoot. “But it all happened so quickly that I just had to take it one moment, one day at a time, because what else could I do? When we were making this film, I saw it as an opportunity to learn. I didn’t feel the pressure to do well or anything, because I thought, Well, they’re going to be better anyway, so I’m just going to do what I know best!”

Martin has a perfect English accent, having been educated at international schools all her life and her mother being British. That her speaking voice is so prim and proper makes it all the more surprising that she was selected for what she describes as “probably the most sexually explicit film in the world!   “I knew how much nudity and sex was going to be in the film, but I also knew that I would have a porn double, and I knew there was going to be prosthetics,” she explains, on the verge of laughing.
How does she feel now that it’s done, and what’s on her very bright horizon?

“It was only after we’d finished shooting, when I got back home, that I broke down in tears. I was at home and I thought, Oh my God. This just happened. And I started laughing and crying at the same time. And I called my mum and I was like, ‘I’m really happy but I’m crying?’ And she said, ‘That’s  okay.’  I realized I’d been given a chance to do what I love, and I really hope I get to do it again. That’s all I want!”
