One of our favorite up-and-comers in New York is the kid from a small town in Kansas who came to us by way of San Francisco and Los Angeles, recording, performing, photographing and writing everything down along the way: Alexis Penney. His life story is as full as many persons of twice or three times his age, which can be heard in the California new-age-meets-NYC after-hours-meets suburban-longing in his first full-legnth release, Window (Ecstasy), available for pre-order (out August 6th). It can also be experienced via his first book, also titled Window (Peradam), and also available for pre-order (out September 19th).
We asked Penney what the impetus was for creating a book and an album of the same name. Read his response below.
ALEXIS PENNEY The book I wrote [after] meeting Elizabeth Jaeger from Peradam at a party and sending it to her in its infancy. She was like 'Okay great I want to put it out' and I was like 'Oh shit wow okay I have to finish it then!'
The record was kind of similar. Tamaryn convinced me that I needed to do a full record before I would take myself seriously as an artist... I wrestled it into being with Jamie Crewe from UK's Poisonous Relationship and Nick Weiss from Teengirl Fantasy, over the course of almost two years, between LA, SF, and NYC.
I thought maybe I'd have to shop it around once I was finished, not knowing how Ecstasy, who I had worked with previously on the "Lonely Sea" single/EP, would react, but when I sent them the first batch of demos they were immediately like, 'Okay, so we wanna put it out,' and I was like, 'Oh shit, so now I have to finish this too!'
I feel really good about them both, separately, and especially together as complements. I'm working on new stuff right now... Really excited to finally do something that's not so specifally inspired by this one relationship which ended over three and a half years ago!
