TEXT ELLIOTT DAVID

Kirin J Callinan sits down in a rickety wooden tall-back chair in the middle of the stage and says, “Hello everyone,” as if he’s about to begin story hour. This is apropos of the setting, since we seem to be in some sort of children’s puppet show theater. There are about 25 people here, and I have no idea what I’m about to see, really.

“I know you love Scott Walker, you have to come to this show,” read an email from PR empress Sonya Kolowrat of Beggars Group, whom I’ve been stalking for, like, two years about getting in the same room as the aforementioned Walker.

A big part of this job is the hunt for content, particularly that with an element of discovery or exclusivity. It’s a game, really, and the tight science is to always be looking through the eyes of others: our readers, obviously, and my outside self—music lover as opposed to Editor—but mainly through a vicarious lens for our stable of incredible photographers and contributors. The moment the wiry Australian Callinan gets on stage with his electric guitar and lets loose his coarse baritone howl, all I can think is: I’ve got to get this kid in front of Hedi Slimane.

After the show, I bump into Modular Records’ Patrik North, one of my favorite intellectuals in the music game (“I’m just here as a fan”) and Fader editor/music critic Sam Hockley-Smith, whom I subsequently ask to interview Kirin for our upcoming 10th Anniversary Issue. Point being, it’s only a matter of time before Callinan blows up, and we want to time-stamp dibs. Plus, Hedi’s stunning photos are too good not to use as a teaser for our upcoming issue. Look out for the full story in the next issue of VMAN, on stands in September.
