Stella McCartney was in four major Asian cities in four days last week, and, since it’s Stella, she went all out when she went around the world. And you can’t get much bigger than a flash mob-style performance to Daft Punk’s “Around The World,” choreographed by Blanca Li—yes, the woman behind the song’s 1997 music video.
McCartney celebrated her second store opening in Tokyo, her first in Beijing, and Art Basel in Hong Kong. In Shanghai, where she presented eveningwear from her F/W RTW ’13 collections, performances by a live jazz band, plate spinners, contortionists, and acrobats who spelled out the name “STELLA” with their bodies (in Stella McCartney for Adidas) preceded a performance by Shanghai Opera House Prima Mezzo Soprano Wei Qian Wang, who did a cabaret rendition of the classic 1930’s song “Ye Shanghai,” creating a segue for the aforementioned dance number amidst the dinner guests. Models, including Du Juan, Bonnie Chen, Emma Pei, Qi Qi, dancers, including ballerina Tan Yuan Yuan, and actress/singer Tian Yuan took part in the 18-couple ballroom dance, which turned into the modern dance made popular in one of the best music videos every made. And that was just one city in the four-stop tour!
