“A Place for Us,” the ballet which debuted this week at the New York City Ballet’s Spring Gala, is a stripped down affair—a pas de deux set to two sonatas for clarinet and piano. Appropriately, the costumes are sleek and understated: petal-like. In fact, they look high fashion, and this is because they are—Joseph Altuzarra, creative director for the brand, designed them.
Altuzarra studied ballet extensively in Paris during his childhood, and is clearly quite taken with it still. His designs were inspired by movement, he says, and explore a very American playfulness. Above are the sketches for Altuzarra’s costumes and the designer himself fitting the dancers.
